What is BJJ?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)– also known as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu– is a martial art centred around grappling. It predominantly takes place on the ground, and involves no striking. You’ll learn how to establish dominant control and employ submission holds like chokes and armlocks. It’s a unique martial art which allows practitioners to dominate larger and stronger opponents.

Self-defence

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was created in 1923 by the Gracie Family. Helio Gracie, whose lineage Gracie Botany traces back to, designed BJJ with one key principle. All techniques should work on larger, more powerful opponents. It’s regarded as one of the most effective self-defence disciplines on the planet. Not only that, it’s a martial art that works for people of all shapes and sizes.

Health benefits

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an excellent full-body workout, and it’s a martial art that encourages a healthy lifestyle. It’s spar-heavy, which means your cardiovascular ability will improve. It uses muscles from your toes to your forehead. It involves pushing, pulling and every other movement you can think of. You’ll work parts of your body you didn’t even know existed!

Our Classes

Adults Jiu-Jitsu programs

There are many reasons you may want to start BJJ. If you’re interested in self-defence, the martial art’s credentials are evident in the fact that it’s the go-to hand-to-hand combat system for the United States Military. If you’re interested in competition, our coaches can guide you from the mat to the podium. If you’re interested in good health, BJJ will give you a unique workout.

Kids Jiu-Jitsu Programs

BJJ is a great martial art for kids 3-years-old and up. Older kids will learn self-defence techniques and enjoy sparring with similarly aged and trained classmates. For younger ones, we teach Jiu-Jitsu principles through fun-but-educational kids martial arts games and self-defence techniques. There’s a class for every age group.

Women Only Classes

Gracie Botany’s Girls Only Gi lesson is exactly what it sounds like: a class that’s exclusively for women. Women are an important part of any academy, and classes like this are to make everyone feel as comfortable as possible on the mats. This class takes place every Friday at 5:15 pm. This leads directly into our 6pm class on Fridays, the All Levels Gi lesson.

Toddlers Classes

Gracie Humaita Botany offers BJJ classes for children aged between 3 and 5 years old. These 30-minute classes are specifically designed for pre-schoolers. At our academy, children aged 3 to 5 years old do not engage in sparring during class. Instead, the focus is on developing coordination, discipline, and confidence.

Teen Classes

Teen classes are for kids aged 12-15, and act as a bridge to get them into Fundamentals and Intermediate classes (depending on their experience level). Teenagers will learn BJJ competition and self-defence techniques in a safe environment that hones not just their physical skills, but their confidence too.

White Belts Only Classes

The White Belts Only class is a basic lesson for fresh white belts. It features no sparring or warming up, and exclusively focuses on technique. Martial arts can be intimidating at first, and this class is designed to ease new members into training. Fundamentals are the most important part of any Jiu-Jitsu practitioner’s skillset.

No-Gi Classes

Gracie Humaita Botany is primarily a Gi (traditional uniform) academy, but we also provide No-Gi training. Gracie Botany’s No-Gi coaches are fully qualified and meet strict Gracie Humaita standards. Our No-Gi coaches have extensive experience competing in No-Gi BJJ tournaments and grappling events.

Morning Classes

Rise and shine, it’s BJJ time. For South Sydney’s early risers, Gracie Botany offers two morning classes each week. These take place on Tuesdays and Thursday, from 6:30am to 7:30am. Anyone who’s tried before knows, starting your day with Jiu-Jitsu is the best way to wake up.

Private Classes Gi or No-Gi

Gracie Botany will have classes running six days a week, but we offer private classes if you’re interested in quickly levelling up your game. Private classes with Professor Craig, Gracie Botany’s black belt instructor, are available upon request. They’re a tool you can use to ask any question, hone any technique and strengthen any weakness.
